Unique identifiers for authors and contributors to other scholarly works are still rarely used for a number of technical and political reasons. The Open Researcher & Contributor ID (ORCID) initiative wants to change that and is trying to take all the necessary steps to facilitate widespread adoption of the ORCID service that is scheduled to launch in the Spring of 2012.
